Diffraction properties of substrate guided- wave holograms

Substrate guided-wave (SGW) holograms are recorded by guiding the reference wave to the hologram using an optical substrate.1'2 As compared to conventional holographic recording systems, SGW systems are compact, portable, robust, and easy to align. Since the illuminating beam is encapsulated within the substrate and only the holographic image is diffracted, the hologram can be viewed close to the recording plane without the danger of eye damage associated with the undiffracted light produced during off-axis reconstruction. These inherent advantages have led to a number of practical applications for SGW holograms38 ranging from illuminators in spatial light modulators9 to sensors in holographic nondestructive testing 0 11

Single-substrate birefringent computer-generated holograms.
A polarization-selective computer-generated hologram fabricated upon a single substrate of birefringent YVO(4) crystal is demonstrated. Rigorous couple-wave analysis was used to model the element. The experimentally measured first diffraction order showed a close-to-theoretically predicted diffraction efficiency of 39%. The polarization contrast ratio was measured to be 33:1.

Different erasure mechanisms are investigated, and a recording schedule for multiplexing holograms with equal diffraction efficiencies is proposed.
